What is Working Draft Summer Camp?

A retreat for all writers. Inclusive. Intentional. Inspired.

A four-day, in-person writing retreat for writers at every stage—led by bestselling authors Gregory Ashe, Macy Blake, and Charlie Cochet.

Working Draft Summer Camp brings together a diverse, supportive group of writers for four transformative days of learning, reflection, and creation. In 2027, our focus will be “Found Family”—building stories (and audiences) on the premise of kindred spirits finding each other.

You’ll join daily workshops from our instructors, take part in skill-building sessions led by peers, share your work (if you choose), and have time to write. Every participant also has the opportunity to meet one-on-one with our instructors for tailored feedback and encouragement.

The retreat will run from Friday, July 9 to Monday, July 12, 2027 at St. Mary’s Sewanee just outside Nashville. (https://www.stmaryssewanee.org/

What Our Writers Say

  • Gregory Ashe’s retreat gave me exactly what I needed: focused time to draft new work, thoughtful instruction that strengthened my writing, and a generous community of queer authors. Meeting accomplished writers I have long admired was an extraordinary bonus, but Greg’s insight, warmth, and commitment to every writer in attendance made the experience truly exceptional.
    Derek P.
  • Working Draft Summer Camp was a gathering not only of authors at varying stages in their writing journeys, but a “found family” of sorts with the same drive and intention: to tell a story, because we simply cannot help it. The instructors and other attendees were open and encouraging and curious. Online friends have become in-person friends, and existing friendships have been strengthened. I came away from the retreat informed, energized, and excited, not only about writing, but also the business side of it as well. Time well-spent that I will carry forward with me.
    Hank E.
  • Working Draft Summer Camp was an amazing opportunity to learn from, network with, and get to know writers at all levels of craft and career. I would absolutely attend again!
